Olalla Easter Breakfast at Fire Dist. 7, Station 12

Members of Fire Dist. 7, Local # 2876 and KCFD 7 Volunteer Association put their time and energy into conducting the Olalla Easter Breakfast at fire station 12 on the corner of Mullenix and Olalla Valley this weekend.  Fire District 7 members were pleased to volunteer and become involved in the community event which has been a tradition for longer than most can remember; some 30 plus years.  Retired judge, Jim Roper, his family, and other former members of the Olalla station are veterans of the annual community breakfast.

Saturday’s preparations for the Sunday event proved to be a bit of a challenge this year as the volunteering fire personnel trying to set up the station for the breakfast were periodically needed to supplement the on shift crews in order to manage an unusual amount of emergency situations through out the day.  But, their efforts to embrace the community did prevail.

Sunday’s Breakfast was another community success.  Many Olalla families stopped by to talk memories and have a pancake, ham, and eggs breakfast cooked up and served by various department members.  Among the over a dozen helpful hands; KCFD 7 Volunteer Association President, Lt. Mike Smith, and Local Union # 2876 firefighter member, Mike Eslava, manned the grills throughout the day.  Even Fire Commissioner Darla Hartley and family members attended; showing support by serving those who stopped to dine.

During the breakfast, Volunteer Battalion Chief Terry Bontrager presented a plaque to the Nelson family as a tribute to the 30th anniversary of fallen firefighter, Battalion Chief Robert Nelson, whose life ended during a structure fire in 1974.  The plaque was prepared by the KCFD 7 and Port Orchard Volunteer Associations and will be displayed on a wall at Fire District 7 headquarters, station 8.  Presenting the plaque at the breakfast was fitting because B.C. Nelson was instrumental in starting the Olalla Easter Breakfast tradition.

Meal plates were $5.00 for adults and $4.00 for children.  All proceeds from this event are in turn used to benefit the Olalla Community.  Olalla resident and cancer victim, Brianna Howarth, will receive this year’s event proceeds in excess of $700.00.

Another part of the Easter celebrations in the Olalla area is the Egg Hunt conducted at the Olalla Elementary School and adjacent Triangle Park.  Although Fire District 7 members contribute to this event, it is primary conducted by Girl Scout Troop # 1882, Totem Council, led by Nancy Benjamin.
