Washington State Annual Fire School
and Conference notes from 2008

Congratulations to our members Preston, Eric, and Terry!
The Department with the three highest scoring members in the Scholastic Track is awarded the
Captain Joseph R. Cook Memorial Trophy each year. This trophy is named for Washington State’s first Fire Training Officer.
This is a perpetual trophy that lists all of the former winning departments.
The Fred G. Allison Scholastic Achievement Award (a Gold Watch) is presented to the person
who scorers the highest in the Scholastic Track. He or she will be listed on the Judge Hugh
Rosellini Perpetual Trophy. To be eligible, members have to attend and take written tests on all three days of the
Scholastic Track at the Annual Fire School and Conference.
In 2008, the winning team was from South Kitsap Fire Rescue comprised of Firefighter/EMT-B
Terry Lerma, Firefighter/EMT-B Eric Rush, and Firefighter/EMT-B Preston Cronce, all from
Battalion V-2 at Station 6 in Sunnyslope.
Firefighter Eric Rush from South Kitsap Fire Rescue also won the gold watch for the
Fred G. Allison Scholastic Achievement Award.
Honored with the Keystone Award
On June 7th, 2004, the SKFR Volunteer
Association received the Keystone Award from Sidney Glen Elementary for the
efforts made to the cause. Chair, Lt. Mike Smith and Co-Chair, FF Dan Cryder, who were instrumental in making the donation
happen, accepted the award for the Association.
Volunteer Battalion Chief Terry Bontrager shows the Fire Commissioners of District 7 the Plaque presented to the family of Robert "Bob" Nelsen during the 2004 Olalla Easter Breakfast event. The plaque marks the 30th anniversary of Bob Nelsen's died due to a heart attack during a structure fire in 1974. The plaque was prepared by the KCFD 7 and Port Orchard Volunteer Associations and is currently displayed on a wall at Fire District 7 headquarters, station 8.
Saw-z-alls are valuable as forcible-entry and extrication tools. Due to budget restrictions, upgrading to such a tool for the department was cut from the budget. The Volunteer Association members of the department recognize the potential of this tool and decided to purchase one in order to equip both the extrication engines with this valuable resource.
The WSFFA conducted their Winter Board Meeting at District 7's Station 31, on January 10th.
