SCOPE
All department volunteer Combat personnel
PURPOSE
It is recognized that the Fire Department operates continuously around the clock to provide emergency services to the citizens of the community. In order to provide this service, the department implements many different staffing programs. The Volunteer Shift (V Shift) program is another such opportunity to provide such staffing, specific to volunteers. V Shift allows the combat volunteer a specific time of commitment in which they can perform their civic duty to the community and still have quality time off with their family and friends. It also provides a consistent staffing tool to meet the needs of the operations division and intent of the second wave policy.
POLICY
Current volunteers are encouraged to be part of the V Shift program. New Volunteer members coming into the volunteer combat program of the department will be placed on a V shift.
The V Shift cycle shall be on a three cycle platoon. Each shift will be on call for one week, and off two.
Each of the three V Shifts will be assigned to one of the three volunteer battalion chiefs. Once assigned they shall be on duty the same week as their assigned battalion chief.
While on duty, shift volunteer combat members are required to respond to priority emergency alarms (i.e. structure fires, mva rollovers/entrapment, rescue, etc.) Combat volunteers not on duty are not required to respond to alarms, but are encouraged to respond to alarms using the Good Sam (Home Tone) rule, when they believe they can be of help and make a difference in the outcome to their community or neighborhood.
If a member on duty who is not able to fulfill their commitment during their assigned shift (for any length of time), they shall find their own coverage or replacement, by contacting another member who is not on duty, and having that member cover for them in their absence. The member is also responsible to contact his or her assigned Battalion Chief to inform him of the change and whether or not the other individual is a qualified driver.
Change of shift will take place on every Tuesday at 0800 hours.
No member may permanently swap shifts with another other without going through their chain of command and the approval of the Chief of Operations.
